Where They Live: African forest elephants primarily inhabit the dense rainforests of Central and West Africa. How Many Are Left: The African forest elephant population has seen a staggering decline of over 86% in the last 31 years. Today, fewer than 100,000 individuals remain, making them critically endangered. 1. Poaching for Ivory: Forest elephants are hunted for their ivory, which is denser and straighter than that of their savanna counterparts, making it highly desirable for carving.
