Great Hammerhead Shark
Where They Live: The Great Hammerhead Shark is a circumtropical species, inhabiting coastal temperate waters across the world, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They prefer warm waters above 20°C and are usually found near continental shelves, coral reefs, and lagoons, often at depths of around 80 meters (Earth.Org).
How Many Are Left: The population of Great Hammerhead Sharks has dramatically declined, with some estimates showing a more than 50% decrease in the past 70 years. This species is currently classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, and their population continues to face a high risk of extinction (NOAA Fisheries).
Why They Are Endangered: The Great Hammerhead Shark is heavily targeted for its large, highly coveted fins, which are used in shark fin soup. Their fins are a significant part of the global fin trade, making them one of the preferred species for this practice. High mortality rates during capture (over 90%) further complicate their recovery. Additionally, the species is caught as bycatch in commercial fisheries and faces threats from habitat destruction and pollution (Shark Stewards).
3 Things We Can Do to Save Them:
- Support Shark Conservation Organizations: Donate to or volunteer with organizations that focus on shark conservation and the protection of marine habitats.
- Promote Sustainable Seafood Choices: Avoid purchasing seafood that contributes to overfishing and bycatch. Look for sustainably certified seafood options to ensure you’re not indirectly supporting harmful fishing practices.
- Raise Awareness and Advocate for Change: Use your voice to support stronger protections for sharks, such as better regulation of shark finning and the establishment of marine protected areas.
Fun Fact: Hammerhead sharks have a unique head shape called a “cephalofoil.” This allows them to have 360-degree vision and helps them detect prey more effectively using special sensors that pick up electric fields emitted by other animals.
By taking small steps and spreading awareness, we can help protect this incredible species and ensure they continue to play their vital role in marine ecosystems.
