Amur Leopard
Where They Live: Amur leopards inhabit the temperate forests of southeastern Russia and northeastern China, primarily in the regions of the Amur River Basin and surrounding mountain ranges. These elusive big cats prefer areas with mixed Korean pine and deciduous trees, avoiding open grasslands or populated regions. Their range is limited to less than 2,500 square kilometers, making their habitat smaller than the size of many small countries (WWF).
How Many Are Left: There are currently fewer than 200 Amur leopards left in the wild, with about 125 adults in Russia and an additional 46 in China. This critically low population number classifies them as one of the world’s rarest big cats (WWF) (WWF).
